The Psychophysiology of Sport and Exercise Performance Research Group is based in the Human Performance Centre, recently expanded through a £1.9 million investment completed in 2010. The Centre is now a state-of-the-art facility comprising of specialist rooms and laboratories, including three designated Physiology laboratories and a Psychology Laboratory. With a focus on health, exercise and sport advancement, in addition to standard ergometers for cycling, kayaking, rowing and running, the laboratories also includes a swimming flume (Endless Pool), isokinetic (Cybex), curve treadmill (Woodway) and cycle ergometer (SRM). To measure physiological response to activity, in addition to standard equipment, portable measuring devices include online cardio-pulmonary carts, haematological analysers and field-based performance analysis equipment.
In combination with the School of Psychology and their linked cognitive neuroscience research activities, the PESP group are currently exploring the use of Near Infer-red Spectroscopy (NIRS) and cerebral blood flow measures (Laser Doppler) to explore the role central function upon exercise.
